what is twitter - for my friends who do not know the name twitter must be wondering whether it is and what the heck twitter twitter functions that ..? twitter is a website owned and operated by Twitter Inc.., which offers a Micro-blogging social network that allows users to send and read messages are called tweets. Tweets are text posts to 140 characters are displayed on the user profile pages. Tweets can be seen outside, but the sender can restrict delivery of messages to their friends list only. Users can see the tweets of other writers known as followers.
All users can send and receive tweets via Twitter site, compatible external applications (mobile phones), or with a short message (SMS) available in certain countries. This site is based in San Bruno, California near San Francisco, where the site was first created. Twitter also has a server and an office in San Antonio, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.
Since established in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained popularity worldwide and currently has more than 100 million users. This is sometimes described as "SMS from the internet".

Tom Daley the winner's podium in Delhi
Tom Daley the winner's podium in Delhi - and he racked up perfect tens to capture his second Commonwealth Games gold medal in as many days in Delhi.
The 16-year-old world champion won his battle with Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham to top the podium in the individual 10m platform competition.
Daley's GCSE results have been big news recently, achieving all A*s and two As, and his third dive received flawless marks in the 10m final as Australia's Mitcham buckled under the pressure and settled his fourth silver of the Games.
For his third dive, Daley was awarded 96.00 points and Mitcham, diving immediately after him, having notched up the highest score in qualifying, could not respond.
With his next dive he retook the lead and a near flawless sixth and final dive ensured Mitcham had no room for error with his final effort.
But he could not respond and Daley eventually took gold at a canter, chalking up 538.25 points to win by 29.20 points ahead of Mitcham, while Malaysia's Bryan Lomas secured bronze.
It's been a turbulent year for Daley as a torn tricep ruled him out of the European Championships, and the World Junior Championships and ensured he could only compete in his weaker event at the Youth Olympics.
But with his arm now effectively healed, Daley has repeated the form that saw him top the World Championships podium in Rome last summer.
He may just be 16 but his illustrious CV already boasts the European, world and Commonwealth title - and it's the Olympic crown that is next on Daley's agenda.
"Today has been a real whirlwind," said Daley. "I managed perfect tens in qualifying but I still only went through to the final in second place.
"But I managed to do it again in the final and fortunately I was able to get the gold. I knew that I had to stand up on the board and give it everything and produce the dive of my life.
"There has been a lot of pressure on me, coming back from injury, and I haven't been able to train on the 10m board as much as I would have liked."
Daley's season has been somewhat blighted by injuries but part of the reason he has not always achieved the results this season is his decision to set about improving his diving repertoire.
And while he's had to take one step backwards to go two steps forwards, Daley admits the sacrifice has been worth it.
"It's amazing to come back here and get the gold medal and beat someone like Matt Mitcham who is the Olympic champion," he added.
